#DiverseReads2017 Book Challenge

In the new year, I'll be joining hosts Mishma at Chasing Faerytales and Shelly at Read Sleep Repeat and participating in the #DiverseReads2017 book challenge. My reading focus will be on Indigenous and Australian authors who write diversely. I love Australian young adult fiction and it often tends to be overlooked for more popular, American authors. Remember that to read diversely is to read from more than one experience. Experiences that transcend borders, heritage and your own experiences.

  1. I don't come across a lot of diverse books but that is more because of the genres I read. I don't read YA, romance or contemporary. I find in my zombie books we get a decent range of ethnic backgrounds for the soldiers...but what I'd love to see more of in books are MCs with a range of disabilities. Why not a blind person with a guide dog or someone in a wheelchair trying to survive the apocalypse? I'd love to read things like that. Enjoy your challenge!

    1. Me too Chuckles. Everyone deserves to be represented and I would love to see more books featuring characters who have a disability no matter the genre.

  2. Oooh, I can't wait to see your reviews on these! I loved The First Third. It's so funny and awkward and funnily awkward. (Shh that makes tons of sense.) 😂

    1. I've learnt to understand your strange language by now. That made perfect sense. The First Third is top of my list actually, I loved The Sidekicks and can't wait to crack it open!

  3. I think I've only one diverse book in my entire bookworm life and I'm ashamed of not exploring more. I want to make 2017 different by reading more diverse books and I think I just added all of these books you listed on my tbr list haha! Happy holidays Kelly! :D

    1. I tend to read the majority of Australian authors and we're lucky that our authors are diverse themselves so we have a wide variety of narratives. I'm hoping next year to read less new release authors and read older back releases that are little known. I'm thrilled to see you adding these Ella, if you want to buddy read any of them, please be sure to let me know because I'd love to!

      Happy holidays sweetheart!

  6. These are gorgeous covers. I tend to focus on crime/mystery novels, with a good mix of both male and female authors I think. I do need to read more Australian crime authors though.

  7. I love Melina Marchetta, but I've yet to read The Piper's Son. All of the other books, however, I did not know but I'm definitely going to check them out because well, diverse reads ftw, but also because all of those covers are extremely beautiful.
