The breathtaking short story that connects the first two novels in the Starbound trilogy, These Broken Stars and This Shattered World.

Tarver still has nightmares about the night, six months before the Icarus crash, when he rescued a group of civilian researchers being held hostage by brutal mercenaries. Now Tarver and Lilac must reconcile his memories of that fateful night with the truth that they uncovered on a mysterious planet after the Icarus crashed.
Tarver is on his way to the research facility, along with fellow soldier Fisk on their routine patrol. Believing that faulty equipment has caused a transmission to be cut short, the two are sent to explore the facility. But what they find is a hostage situation. The mercenaries are holding the resident scientists hostage and tarver finds himself fighting for his life, and those around him he vows to protect.

Alliances will be torn, blood will be shed and Tarver will never be the same again.

Kelly's Thoughts

This Night So Dark follows the story of Tarver, taking place before he found himself on the Icarus, and being stranded with Lilac before disaster struck. He holds the position on the patrol squad, seemingly an easy task as he recovers from his duty on the front lines. As he recalls that night at the facility to Lilac, the reader learns more about LaRoux industries, the technology that fueled the Icarus and why he was a celebrated and decorated hero. It was a superb read.

The second half of this free novella contains the first three chapters of These Broken Stars and This Shattered World, which I'm eagerly awaiting to be released. This Shattered World is the story of Jubilee and Flynn, one a military captain and the other a rebel leader who is holding Lee hostage in the midst of an escalating war. It was three chapters of brilliance. The reader is thrown straight into the action and introuduced to the two new characters, Lee and Flynn, that will take the Starbound series to the next level.

I'm giddy with excitement waiting for it's release.

  1. I'm so excited for this novella! I'm not usually a novella sort of person, but considering how much I enjoyed These Broken Stars, I know that I at least am going to give this a go. Besides, I wasn't FULLY satisfied with Tarver and Lilac's ending, so hopefully this'll give me some closure... :)

    1. I think you'll really enjoy this one Kara. It gives the reader a glimpse of what Tarver and Lilac are up to now, with Tarver recalling what happened leading up to his arrival on the Icarus. It's out now on Amazon for free, definitely grab a copy.

    1. I loved it as well, one of my top five favourite reads, ever. I'm not generally a fan either, but I think reading it may help you understand the gap between book one and two much sooner so you'll enjoy the storyline more. AND it has three chapters of This Shattered World, that alone is worth grabbing a free copy and giving it a read.

Go on, you know you want to.

  3. I absolutely adored this too Kelly! :D Definitely something to entertain us all while we (impatiently!) wait for This Shattered World. I'm not usually a fan of short stories / novellas because they always leave me wanting more; but this was absolutely wonderfully done. Thanks for sharing Kelly! <3

    1. Me too Zoe. Novellas only leave you wanting more, luckily for us This Shattered World will be coming out shortly and we wont have too much longer to wait. I loved how this gave us a insight into Tarver before he ended up on the Icarus, it's bridged the gap nicely.

  4. Oooh, this is so exciting. I've always loved Tarver and consider him a book boyfriend if I ever had one :P Practical, nice, knows what he wants... just the kinda guy I like. I need to get this novella soon! I have This Shattered World as an ARC already and I'm so excited to get it. Most of the reviews have been really positive, too!

    1. It's free on Amazon, so I urge everyone to download it before reading This Shattered World. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy, I need it like I need air!

That was so incredibly dramatic, even for me.

  5. I have this! I'm not sure whether I should read this before or after This Shattered World, but it looks like it's not a direct sequel, but more of a prequel? So yes I will be reading this soon!!! :D :D Thanks for the little review Kelly!

    1. It's to bring both storylines together, so I'd definitely read it before This Shattered World. I think it'll help pick up the storyline from book two easier, as it provides a little history behind the terraform company as well.
