High School

For most adults reminiscing about their adolescence, high school was a moment of being carefree, of learning responsibilities and our place within the world. During my own adolescent years I was preoccupied with fashion and friendship rather than reading. With much regret. #LoveOzYA provides young adults with wonderful coming of age contemporaries, profound narratives and characters that will captivate readers until the final page.

Saving Francesca is a compassionate coming of age story, told from the perspective of a girl who is struggling to find her place in the world without her mother. You can continue the story of Saving Francesca character Jimmy Hailler in When Rosie Met Jim.

Green Valentine is wonderful coming of age with a strong environmental conscious, that proves that friendship and falling in love really knows no bounds.

Summer Skin is a book to empower young women. The snark, the strong female characters, the compassion and tenderness. The message of being your own person and fighting against the stereotypes of both sexes. Buy it. Idolise it. Refer to it as the thinking young woman's bible.

    1. Me too Tasya! Even though it's technically new adult. Melina Marchetta is one of those prolific authors that I recommend as an introduction to Australian young adult. Especially her contemporaries.

  2. I adored Summer Skin, it brings my love for NA tropes into the aussie enviorment and gosh it was good. I still haven't read a Melina Marchetta book *goes in a corner and hides.* We never read them in high school, so I never picked it up them. Hopefully soon.

    1. I'm an avid reader of the mature young adult slash new adult titles as well. I find with new adult, so much of the narrative focuses on sex but with mature young adult it seems to be the opposite and relationships seem genuine and complex. Rather than overly sexual.

    1. That's a brilliant idea Casey. We should start a readalong group and see if others want to take part as well.

  5. I still need to read something/anything by Melina Marchetta - I'll get there.

Loved the other two :-). Both feel good stories; cute and awkward eco-conscious teens and GIRL POWER!! Oh how I wish Summer Skin had been around for me to read as teen!

    1. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've said the exact same thing myself Sarah. Even bring new adult, I had to sneak it in. I would have thought you would be a huge Marchetta fan! We must rectify this immediately with Looking For Alibrandi.

  6. There have been more than a couple of times that I wished I had books like these to guide me through high school. Back then, all I wanted was to not read YA. Man. *shakes head*

    1. Looking back on my teen years and I honestly wished I'd continued to read. Teens are so much more aware these days where I was more self absorbed.

  7. Thanks for sharing all of these! I really want to read more Aussie fiction. So much of it just sounds PERFECT for me. I own one Melina Marchetta book, but I really need to actually read it. I'm so behind on her!

    1. Wow, thank you so much Lauren. It's an absolute honour to be included. I love Australian young adult and especially now we're starting to see more diversity within it's characters to represent our large, multicultural communities.
