High School
For most adults reminiscing about their adolescence, high school was a moment of being carefree, of learning responsibilities and our place within the world. During my own adolescent years I was preoccupied with fashion and friendship rather than reading. With much regret. #LoveOzYA provides young adults with wonderful coming of age contemporaries, profound narratives and characters that will captivate readers until the final page.
Saving Francesca is a compassionate coming of age story, told from the perspective of a girl who is struggling to find her place in the world without her mother. You can continue the story of Saving Francesca character Jimmy Hailler in When Rosie Met Jim.
Green Valentine is wonderful coming of age with a strong environmental conscious, that proves that friendship and falling in love really knows no bounds.
Summer Skin is a book to empower young women. The snark, the strong female characters, the compassion and tenderness. The message of being your own person and fighting against the stereotypes of both sexes. Buy it. Idolise it. Refer to it as the thinking young woman's bible.

The next #LoveOzYABloggers is Fantasy recommendations.
I love Summer Skin, so I'll definitely check your other recs :D But I feel it's more into NA then YA though. Great recs!
ReplyDeleteMe too Tasya! Even though it's technically new adult. Melina Marchetta is one of those prolific authors that I recommend as an introduction to Australian young adult. Especially her contemporaries.
DeleteI adored Summer Skin, it brings my love for NA tropes into the aussie enviorment and gosh it was good. I still haven't read a Melina Marchetta book *goes in a corner and hides.* We never read them in high school, so I never picked it up them. Hopefully soon.
ReplyDeleteI'm an avid reader of the mature young adult slash new adult titles as well. I find with new adult, so much of the narrative focuses on sex but with mature young adult it seems to be the opposite and relationships seem genuine and complex. Rather than overly sexual.
DeleteAwesome recs! :D I read a fair but as a teen but mainly adults and now I'm an "adult" and read mainly teen books XD How the times have changed! I've read Saving Francesca in school but can't remember it :( I need to reread all my Melina Marchetta books soon, re live some teen memories.
ReplyDeleteThat's a brilliant idea Casey. We should start a readalong group and see if others want to take part as well.
DeleteAwesome books! I need to read all three of these, heard great things about all of them too. :D
ReplyDeleteThey're all incredible reads in their own right, highly recommend. Can't wait for the next fortnightly fantasy prompt.
DeleteI still need to read something/anything by Melina Marchetta - I'll get there.
ReplyDeleteLoved the other two :-). Both feel good stories; cute and awkward eco-conscious teens and GIRL POWER!! Oh how I wish Summer Skin had been around for me to read as teen!
I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've said the exact same thing myself Sarah. Even bring new adult, I had to sneak it in. I would have thought you would be a huge Marchetta fan! We must rectify this immediately with Looking For Alibrandi.
DeleteThere have been more than a couple of times that I wished I had books like these to guide me through high school. Back then, all I wanted was to not read YA. Man. *shakes head*
ReplyDeleteLooking back on my teen years and I honestly wished I'd continued to read. Teens are so much more aware these days where I was more self absorbed.
DeleteThanks for sharing all of these! I really want to read more Aussie fiction. So much of it just sounds PERFECT for me. I own one Melina Marchetta book, but I really need to actually read it. I'm so behind on her!

p.s. I shared one of your reviews here: https://letsgetbeyondtolerance.blogspot.com/2017/07/rainbow-roundup-from-vampires-to.html
Wow, thank you so much Lauren. It's an absolute honour to be included. I love Australian young adult and especially now we're starting to see more diversity within it's characters to represent our large, multicultural communities.
Deletepretty sure i will be able to find them in the library :P being aussie and all i hope
ReplyDeleteYou definitely should Ailyn, or they could probably place an order for you. I'd love to see what you think of them!
DeleteI've had Saving Francesca on my list for years but Summer Skin is really calling to me right now.
ReplyDeleteFor What It's Worth
Summer Skin is absolutely magnificent! It's one read that I recommend to everyone. It's positive and empowering for young women.
