The year that was in Australia

In Australia we were Googling how to make Beef Stroganoff, how to make slime and Sophie Monk was the most searched Australian on the internet. We wanted to read about Cyclone Debbie and North Korea, Harvey Weinstein and the Australian Open. We still have no idea what a Bitcoin is. The distracted boyfriend meme took social media by storm, mocking Sponge Bob mocked us and Meryl Streep continued to yell abuse. Parents continue to call their spawn Charlotte and Oliver and we're still watching The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.

Women in their thousands shared their experiences of sexual abuse across social media using the #MeToo hashtag, while actors like Matt Damon insisted decent men deserve a parade for not sexually assaulting women. I hope to see #mattdamonisawanker trending shortly. Australia's disgrace continues to be the refugees of Manus Island and the neglect of asylum seekers. The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre continue the tireless work towards human rights, join the conversation by using the hashtag #BringThemHere. We also continue to demand the government to change the day in which we celebrate Australia's colonisation by the British, resulting in the genocide of Indigenous Australians. Australian's, demand we #ChangeTheDate.

Politicians were resigning over the Citizenship debacle, Australian Conservative Cory Bernardi is an even bigger wanker than Matt Damon and Malcolm Turnbull thought it was a great idea to have the nation note on Marriage Equality. Australian's voted yes. Go fuck yourself Cory Barnardi. Victoria is the first state to legalise Euthanasia. Magda Szubanski is the darling of Australia for her tireless work throughout the LGBTTQQIAAP community. Currently researching if we can elect a member to parliament without their knowledge.

Australia was listening to Ed Sheeran. Beauty and The Beast was the highest grossing film. Richmond are the AFL premiers, Melbourne Storm won the NRL grand final, Rekindling won the Melbourne Cup. Isaiah Firebrace represented Australia at Eurovision. Yeah, we don't know why we're there either. I also surpassed half a million views. Totally bitching.

And we read!

    1. Thanks Nicole! I thought it would be a nice touch and to carry on my tradition from last year as well. The media have been so consumed by the Trump presidency that people probably hear very little of overseas current affairs.

  4. Love your 2018 goals: yes girl! Congrats on five years of blogging too. That's fantastic, and I'm so glad you're still here. I love your blog. I need to read Gap Year in Ghost Town; it looks amazing, and that cover is beautiful. And I'm glad that Australia legalized gay marriage this year!

    1. Me too Lauren. Holding the nationwide plebiscite was so damaging to the LGBT community though, the no campaign ran incredibly damaging advertisements based on lies that were offensive and distressing to so many. It was a long time coming though and I'm thrilled that all Australian's now have marriage equality.

  5. I am so confused why so many people were wondering how to make beef stroganoff but hope their beff stroganoffs turned out okay? Hope no houses were set on fire but who knows.

I completely agree that #mattdamonisawanker and maybe between the two of us, we can make this trend worldwide.

Also, I cannot believe you've been around for 5 years. HOW WILD IS THAT? What a time to be alive. Glad I've gotten to know you.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, BUD, I hope your year is off to a good start and will be full of lots of amazing things <3

    1. You never can tell. I've never tried it but would rather have my kitchen intact. Matt Damon is a complete tool, should have fired him into the Sun rather than bringing that wanker back from Mars.

You too my darling, I miss the Potato girls. Do you think we'll see a resurrection this year?

  6. Congratulations on the milestone - 5 years is a big one in book blogging land - I've seen many come and go in that time. Here's to another great year of reading!

    1. Me too Jo and it's amazing how much book blogging has also changed in that time. I've found I've slowed down dramatically with both reading and blogging, I feel so much more laid back and blog sporadically seems to really work for me.

    1. It's going to be such a massive year in young adult books, I'm especially excited for all the Aussie author releases too. If I recall correctly, I think someone might have a book out this year.

      It can't come soon enough!

  8. Happy blogoversary, Kelly! 5 years is an amazing feat! Congrats! :)
I love that 2017 in Australia section. Australia is weird, man, but I was so happy about the marriage equality vote! :D And lol so many wankers in the US. They all deserve to rot in hell.
I'm so excited for so many of those books in your list! Especially Twinkle and White Night!
Happy New Year to you, bud!

    1. Happy new year Nick darling! We are, but that's the appeal of Australian's. We're weird. It was one of the high and low lights of the year. It was incredible to see that all Australian's now have marriage equality but the plebiscite was so incredibly harmful to LGBTQ families.

  16. Omg 2017 made me hate Matt Damon, which is really sad. He should just learnt to stfu (how can he say that shit when his BFF is...you know...that guy).

I had a conversation with people at work today and it made me realise how racist and ignorant they are when it comes to Australia Day, I don't know how to approach people that won't bother educating themselves on the reasons for wanting to change the date.

Ooops that was a ramble. Happy blogoversary Kelly! 5 years is quite the achievement :)

  18. I'm still impressed you've been blogging for five years and it's totally awesome. You keep on reading awesome books (and making me want to buy all the Aussie books) and blogging how you want. 2017 was a strange year and it sounds like Australia had a whole bunch going on I didn't even hear about.

  20. HUGE congrats on five years, that is amazing!! What an accomplishment! I love your recap post too, I am DYING at #mattdamonisawanker BWHHAHA. That is epic. Can you imagine explaining this year to like, anyone in the future? "Well kids, when we say it was actual garbage, we aren't joking..." And girl. Your goal for 2018? YEP mine too. It's really the only one we need, tbh. Hopefully 2018 will be a wonderful year for you ♥♥
