I love Australian young adult fiction. I love that it's relevant, it's realistic and Australian authors write with confidence and conviction. We're not afraid of an invasion because John Marsden taught us how to survive, Melina Marchetta welcomed us into her loud and loving Italian Australian family and Bryce Courtney showed us that there's a little bit of Peekay in us all.
But in the last few years, a new breed of Aussie young adult author has emerged. The author who empowers women, the author who is environmentally conscious and the author who isn't afraid to call us out on social injustice. Aussie young adult authors are no bullshit, kick ass advocates for what makes Australia unique. Our people.

Oooh I'm really looking forward to reading Black and Frankie at some point finally! And omg how awesome is Shield going to be?! I love Summer Skin so much and I can't wait to read Shadows. I hope you'll enjoy A Corner of White, it was such a great series! Love the graphics Kelly!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading Shield at the moment Jeann and holy shit, it's magnificent. Shadows is one of my favourites, it's right up there with Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. Absolutely loved it!
DeleteI have to say, your pic of the kangaroo up the top me me smile! What a striking cover Breathing under water is! So many reviews to go read *rubs hands in glee*
ReplyDeleteBreathing Under Water is definitely one of my favourite all time #LoveOzYA reads, it was so emotionally raw. One I can't recommend highly enough!
DeleteYasssss! A kangaroo. I was waiting for someone to post a picture of a kangaroo. Lol. Gah. I see Finnikin. That's my boy! I want to do a post to coincide with this. God knows, I have enough Aussie books to fill a shelf. Lol.
ReplyDeleteYou should Joy, you're an honourary Aussie with the amount of Aussie authors you read. You could probably have a month long celebration just for Melina Marchatta alone. I think it's about time you moved here.
Deletewow.. I have not read any of these.. Thank you for the information :)
ReplyDeleteThey're all wonderful reads Hana, you can't go wrong with a #LoveOzYA title.
DeleteI didn't realize that Our Chemical Hearts was Aussie! I have a copy of this to read soon. Yay! I do really want to read more Aussie fiction. I heard good things about many of these titles.

Ooh, really looking forward to seeing what you think of it Lauren. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.
DeleteI also didn't realize Our Chemical Hearts was Aussie YA BUT NOW I DO. SO I can add that to my list of Aussie reads soon! Also because you pretty much recommend Summer Skin to everyone, my EXPECTATIONS ARE HIGH.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to check out One Would Think The Deep because I've been seeing that around lately!
Yes. You need Summer Skin in your life. I love to throw that book at everyone. It's such an empowering book for young women, that feminism isn't always about fighting for equality but to also teach through empathy and by example. And the innuendo is absolutely brilliant.
DeleteSo many Aussie goodies. I want to read them all! It's hard to get my hands on some of them, though. I could order through the Book Depository, but I prefer ebooks.
ReplyDeleteYou could probably purchase if you change your Kindle address on Amazon actually too Christy. I have to do that on occasion when purchasing US only eBooks on there. Or one of us lovely Aussies can help out if you want to pay for the eBook and we can purchase as a gift on there for it to be sent to you too. I can imagine how frustrating it is though. I think in general, if Aussie books haven't picked up an international publisher, they should be released worldwide on Kindle for everyone to purchase.
DeleteOmg I so want to read Gemina and Shadows. I NEED SHADOWS SO BAD. I don't know why my library doesn't have it??? They are failing me omg?? *glares very fiercely at library so they think about what they've done* I also had no idea Breathing Underwater was Aussie! WOOT. I have that on my TBR and that actually makes me more keen to try it. I think Aussie books are definitely more relatable for me. xD I read a ton of USA books and I love them, but their school system is bizarre. hahah. And it concerns me having all those 16yos with their own cars. What wee babies. (Excuse me did I just get old.)
ReplyDeleteANYWAY. LOVE YOUR LIST. Finnikin is <333 I'm going to re-read that this year (for the 3rd time!! omg!!) and hopefully get to finishing the rest of the series instead of procrastinating. But procrastinating series is like my middle name, so idek. You may now refer to me as Cait Procrastinating Series Drews I suppose. :')
That's quite the mouthful but now I'm curious about what your actual middle name is, so I'll be nagging via social media to know what it is because you know, I'm nosey like that. Shadows is epic. Not too long ago, it was available on Netgalley too or maybe shoot off an email to Text Publishing and they might be able to help you out.
DeleteOh, Kelly. I did not know most of these books! I might add some of them on my shelf in a while. Thank you for all of these. You're always amazing. <3
ReplyDeleteAww, thanks Yani. They're all wonderfully brilliant reads that will appeal to all young adult readers rather than just Aussies.
DeleteAhh sounds like I should start reading some Claire Zorn??
ReplyDeleteOh yes. Yes you should. She's an incredible author Julia, I think my favourite is still The Sky So Heavy but only just. It was actually my first review copy.
DeleteOooh also so SUPER excited for Gemina and My Chemical Heart!!! AHHHH SO MANY GOOD BOOKS!
ReplyDeleteI loved Every Breath so I am so excited to see it on your list Kelly! And I am so excited for Gemina as well. :) Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! <3
ReplyDeleteThanks Zoe. Gemina is going to be absolutely epicness wrapped in awesome! I can't wait until it's released!
DeleteI've never really thought about where the authors originate from but I'm always hearing about how amazing Aussie YA is.
ReplyDeleteI've (unknowngly lol) read a few Aussie authors & the stories do tend to be grittier which I love.
Karen @For What It's Worth
They really do don't they Karen. I find not only can I relate more seeing how I grew up, but they tend to be less over dramatised and more about character growth and learning that their international counterparts too.
DeleteREPRESENT, KELS! ♡♡ I didn't know all of these books were fell Aussie authors! THAT'S SO COOL!I love the fact that they are starting to come out more and more and each one is stepping out and pushing the boundaries more and more!!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Kels!♡♡
They really are! I think authors like Melina Marchetta have done so much for Australian young adult and it has open the door for so many up and coming authors to step through and share their books with the world. I love Aussie YA and it's a brilliant blog hop so hopefully readers will add a few new beauties to their reading lists.
DeleteOops. I have zero exposure to Aussie YA *runs and hides head in shame*. So this blog hop is really useful. Adding a few to my TBR. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome news Resh, I hope you find a few that you really enjoy. Looking forward to seeing your reviews.
DeleteThanks to Nick, I want to read the Every books, Shadows and of course Summer Skin. I think I have only read Illuminae, Me Against You and Graffiti Moon. I need to add more to my list. I love that Aussie YA seems to be sexier :)
ReplyDeleteit really does doesn't it. I think it's because it tends to focus on realistic teen relationships, rather than just the handholding that most other young adult books tends to focus on. I love books that promote healthy sexual relationships and the natural progression of relationships too.
DeleteSuch a great list! Have definitely added a few new books (like Our Chemical Hearts)! Also loved spotting some favourites!
ReplyDeleteThanks Hannah. It's been such a wonderful year for Aussie young adult authors hasn't it. Onwards and upwards.
DeleteI've just recently bought Burn Bright, but I haven't read it yet. I'll move it up the TBR. Great choices!
ReplyDeleteOoh, you must read it as soon as humanly possible! I need someone to discuss the epicness with. I absolutely love that series, one of the best YA paranormal fantasy blends I've read.
DeleteI feel like so many of these aren't published where I live! I did read and really like Every Breathe, though (which is saying something, because I tend to be hit-and-miss with Sherlock Holmes-inspired reads).
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm so excited for Gemina!
